The organization was founded in 1949 by a child welfare worker who saw the suffering of children orphaned as a result of World War II.

SOS Children's Villages is a global federation of 117 national SOS Children's Villages associations working together with a single vision to ensure that every child grows with love, security, and respect.

The organization is active in 134 countries around the world, helping thousands of children through family-based alternative care, schools, health centers, and community-based work.
