The Story Behind the Name
Yes, our name is The Paper Store. And no, we do not sell ‘traditional’ paper. Wrapping paper, note cards, exquisite stationery and a vast selection of Hallmark cards definitely… but no copy paper or card stock.
The Paper Store is the largest family owned and operated chain of specialty gift stores in New England. Our goal is to be the premier destination for all of your gift-giving needs.
Our business began in 1964 when Bob and Peggy Anderson purchased the first store in Maynard, Massachusetts. Originally a stationery store, The Paper Store has evolved into a sophisticated and diverse operation. In addition to social stationery and custom invitations, you can now shop for gifts, social expressions, fashion & jewelry, bath & body, home décor, baby fashion & gifts, educational toys & games, gourmet foods, bestselling books for all ages, and so much more! As you walk through the spacious aisles of The Paper Store, you’ll find new and unique offerings for everyone on your gift list (and at least one irresistible item for yourself). In 2013, we opened our online store to bring the same exciting selection and personal customer service into your home.
Currently, seven family members – as well as a myriad of spouses, cousins and friends – all work together to analyze retail trends and bring you thousands of high-value items from the world’s finest brands. Our stores are staffed with well-trained Associates and Specialists who are happy to help customers find the perfect gift or answer questions. A group of very talented people work to make the atmosphere in our stores beautiful, organized and a pleasure to shop in. We are aiming high – to be your favorite place to shop.
The Paper Store is happy to give back to the community and proudly supports The Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Reach Out and Read, and various local charities.
A Business within a Business Philosophy
As an essential part of having seven family members work together each day as a cohesive, focused team, each person manages a separate area of The Paper Store, applying their unique skills to lead their respective divisions and creating a “business within a business” concept.
At The Paper Store, the “business within a business model” is a concept that applies not only to company leadership, but one that extends throughout all levels of company organization. In the buying department, this model is especially important in upholding The Paper Store’s legacy of high quality selection. Specialized buyers in each of the retail departments are highly knowledgeable in their respective areas and carry only the hottest trend items in order to streamline the customer experience. The result is the diverse selection of covetable gift items that can be found in our stores, which reinforces the “something for everyone” model we strive for in our mission.
The “business within a business model” is also practiced within The Paper Store’s retail locations, as a way to manage the various in-store departments and empower employees. Each department’s size is determined by a sales-to-square footage ratio, in which departments with higher sales are given more floor space within each of the store locations. Employees are motivated to increase the sales of these various departments by providing exceptional customer service and thorough knowledge surrounding featured products and product lines.
Through this “business within a business” philosophy, The Paper Store becomes a team of highly motivated individuals that is committed, at both corporate and store levels, to providing the highest quality selection and the best possible customer experience.
